Abstract: The book presents the most important changes in the political, state, institutional systems and public services practices of Central European countries that underwent over 35 years. With retrospective analyses starting from the regime change, it examines how these countries have addressed the legacy of the past to reach modernization goals inspired by Western models. The pathfinding period brought many theoretical and practical challenges. The authors describe vividly the process through several examples. Like Columbus’s voyage, these European countries have reached a new and unknown stage in their socio-economic development. This comparative work is an indispensable and valuable contribution to understanding its contemporary characteristics
