Abstract: E-government has become a key driver of governance reform, public service efficiency, and sustainable development, with growing evidence linking it to improved accountability, reduced corruption, and stronger socioeconomic outcomes. This paper examines Romania’s e-government trajectory from 2014 to 2024, using the United Nations E-Government Development Index (EGDI), Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI) indicators, and selected Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) metrics. Findings show that while Romania achieved significant progress in telecommunication infrastructure, advances in online services and human capital have stagnated since 2020. Consequently, Romania’s global EGDI ranking declined, reflecting uneven development compared to EU peers. The analysis highlights a structural paradox: robust connectivity coexists with weak adoption, transparency, and citizen trust. Correlation results indicate strong associations between e-government performance and governance integrity, economic prosperity, and digital skills, underscoring the systemic nature of digital transformation. For Romania, progress depends not only on technological investments but also on integrating digital reforms with anticorruption policies, institutional modernization, and digital literacy initiatives. The study concludes that sustainable advancement in e-government requires a shift toward citizen-centered strategies that prioritize transparency, usability, and inclusiveness, aligning digitalization with broader socioeconomic and governance reforms.
